How to measure your dog for clothes – a complete guide

Why does size matter?

The most common mistake when ordering dog clothing is choosing the wrong size. A garment that is too tight restricts the dog's movement, while one that is too loose can get tangled and be uncomfortable.

Which measurements are necessary?

To choose the right size, take three basic measurements using a measuring tape:

  • Neck circumference: Wrap the measuring tape around the base of the neck. The tape should be snug but not tight—you should be able to slide a finger under it.
  • Back length: Measure from the neck to the base of the tail along the dog's back.
  • Chest circumference: Measure the chest at its widest point. The tape should be snug but not tight—leave 1–2 cm of space.

Practical example for small breeds

If your dog is a Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, Spitz, or Maltese, write down the measurements and compare them with our size chart.

Measurement tips

  • The dog should be standing calmly on all four paws—not sitting or lying down
  • The measuring tape should fit snugly against the body without being tight
  • Record the measurements in cm
  • If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one
